Pescados y Mariscos Hector's
Every so often, a humble diner in an unlikely location
ends up making cuisine good enough to make the angels sing,
and Hector's in Chula Vista is just such a place.
Owned by Abraham Castro, the owner/chef who speaks little
English, but with an interpreter, explained to me how it has
been his dream to own a restaurant, and that Hector's is that
dream come true.
He recently bought the restaurant from his Uncle (Whose name
is Hector I presume), changed the menu, and churns out Mexican
style seafood that ranks among the best in town.
Castro has created an innovite menu, featuring some classic
dishes the whole fried fish, shrimp burritos, seven seas soup
are all first rate. But Hector's really hits it's stride with
the fish and exotic sauce combinations. Over seventy variations
of fish and sauce are available. Wtih cod, squid, shrimp, lobster,
octopus, offered with garlic sauce, ranchero, chipotle, veracruz,
diabla, red and green sauce. The calamari with the creamy chipotle
sauce is delightful, the culiches (a mixture of all the seafood)
come with a salsa verde that is excellent. But one dish here maybe
the best Mexican seafood dish of my career.
The Popeye (named for the famous cartoon figure) features a grilled
cod filled, covered with sauteed spinach, then covered with an
incredible creamy mushroom sauce. The unusual mix of flavors is
amazingly good, and costs $ 11. At Hector's, with gourmet Mexican
Seafood as good as it gets..
